« on: May 20, 2008, 08:46:56 PM »
OK name yours.

I love cheap coke (not shasta) and a cup FILLED with home made ice. Best stuff ever. Food lion brand Coke Pwns.

I hate. I hate it when my cup smells like soap. Stupid dish washer.

I love that I have not filled an ice tray in over 5 years.

I hate that I haven't had a day off in 3 years.

I love getting dirty and working beside my employees.

I hate hearing how hard the job is, constant complaints while I am right beside them and they had an entire month of sweeping floors and being paid for it. I am your bosses boss, and I am here to show you its important and not beneath me, do you really expect me to say "why don't you just sit down and watch me do your job"? SHUT UP. YOUR LUCKY YOU EVEN HAVE A JOB Efrim. Honestly!

I love CoR.  :D

Lol, OK, here's the story-my daughter had a school play (another pet peeve...they make you buy a t-shirt for your kid to be in the play...guess whose company prints the t-shirts?  One of the school board members...things that make you go "hmmmm").  The play was in the gym.  So I park as close to the gym as I can because my grandmother, who broke her leg in January, is with me.  So as we're walking up to the front doors of the gym, a woman comes out the doors, sees us approaching and says "You can't come through here, you have to go around."  Now, going through the front doors of the gym into the area where they are having the play is literally about 30 feet.  They don't want people going through there because they have some cafeteria equipment in there.  OK, I can understand that, but the lady who said it just came through the same way.  To walk around, you have to go down a whole row of about 7 classrooms, make a right, and go back down the other side of the classrooms.  Not a big deal to me, but to someone who is recovering from a broken leg and walking with a cane, it's a big deal.  So I simply ask "OK, but can my grandmother go through there?"  And the lady says "No" and goes on about her business.  So we walk around.

That's ridiculous.  No reason for it at all other than "because I said so."  So after the play is over, I tell my grandmother "I don't care what they say, we're going out that way."  And we did.  The school has been like that all year with a lot of things.  In the beginning, they tried to insist that I could not park in the school parking lot and walk into the school to pick up my kids, that I HAD to go through the car line.  Their reasoning: we don't have enough room for everyone to do what you're doing, so you can't do it.  Whatever.  So one day after I parked in the parking lot and walked up to get my kids again, the principal started insisting that she was not releasing my kids until I did what I was told and got in the car line.  Whatever.  The car line was a nightmare-it wasn't unusual to sit in it for over half an hour, because the system was such that everyone crammed into two lines of cars, and even though the 4th grade gets out earlier than the 5th and 6th grades, if the car in the front of the line was there to get one of the kids that got out later, everyone had to sit there and wait.  Needless to say, she wasn't particularly amused when I turned to my kids who she was insisting she was not releasing and said "come on, let's go" and of course they did.  It was even funnier when they had the school's "safety officer" call my house and threaten to have me arrested if I did it again, at which point I hung up on him.

I'm not against rules and regulations...I'm against stupid rules and regulations.

One of the more idiotic things I've seen our local school system doing this year was trying to ban cell phones on all school campuses. They weren't saying that kids couldn't use their cell phones in class, they were saying that they could not posses them on campus at all. I let a few of the administrators know how stupid this was, that they opened the entire school district up to a debilitating lawsuit, citing the well publicized fact that whenever something terrible had happened in other school districts such as crazed people shooting up the school, etc., the students had used their cell phones to call for help, and enlightened them to the systems many colleges and universities were now using that sent out text messages to the students in the event of an emergency. Looks like they finally came around because now then no longer seem to be banning cell phones, they just don't allow students to use them during class.

Oh Goodie.. something I can disagree with X on... it's been too long! :icon_razz:

Cell phones at colleges and universities.. fine.  The students are adults, pay for their education, and the professors can kick them out of class if they're disruptive.

Cell phones for kids at schools?  Eh... I'm on the fence.  I can only imagine the disruption cell phones cause in class... phone calls, text messages, cheating, etc..    Sure the argument can be made they can have them but just not use them, but when is the last time a kid followed a rule like that?  And when you try to punish them for that innocent 'one time' text message parents whine about how you're punishing their kids for no reason.

I dont know.. I just can't see how a bunch of 12 year olds need cell phones at school.  Emergencies?  Good point... I think all the school employees should have them, schools have fire alarms that can be pulled, two way intercom systems in classrooms, security guards have radios, etc...  What if a teacher isn't around?  Well, it's a school.. there can't be one too far off.  What about school bus rides?  The driver can have one, the driver has two way radios, etc.  Student Safety Alert system using text messages and such?  Cell phones only receive alerts if they are on.  If they are on they also get phone calls, text msgs, etc...

As far as kids needing cell phones.... hogwash.  A kid does not need a cell phone.  Sure.. it can be a convenience, but it's not a need.

If I were prinicipal and had to allow kids to carry cell phones to school:
1.  they must remain off at all times unless use is specifically approved by faculty on a case by case basis
2.  you don't power down and get rings and text msgs during school hours, 1 day suspension automatic no hope of appeal
3.  two times, 2 days
4.  3 times, a week - and your cell phone gets run over by the lawnmower in front of all your friends.

ok.. I'm done.   :icon_twisted:

I was told this story, and I believe it true, however as time and passing happens, it might not be entirely accurate.

My Grandfather, Vet, was somewhere, doing something when a guy parks behind him. My grandfather seeing this asks the man to park his car in the parking spot as to not block him in. The guy says very rudely in a laugh, no, that he is in a hurry and my Grandfather will just have to deal with it. Instead of driving the .4 of a second to park beside him. So my Grandfather, goes and does what ever he is supposed to do. (maybe it was a school play)

So they go inside when all of a sudden my Grandfather had to leave. In this emergency he gets to his car only to find the guy has him still blocked in. My grandfather had to get out, and the guy was no where to be found. So my Grandfather pops the guys breaks and rolls the car into a pond.

The end.

Lol that reminds me of the neighbor we had when I was a kid.  He was old and going crazy, and he was just plain mean.  He owned a business next to my house, and he hated it when we played behind his business-it was a huge open field, and we weren't hurting anything, he just didn't like us being there.  During business hours, they parked their cars back there, and the driveway wasn't paved.  Being that we live right on the Gulf of Mexico and oysters are big business around here, oyster shells can be had for next to nothing, so every so often he would have a truck full of oyster shells dumped in his driveway.  It was cheap and effective.  So, to give you the setup, not only did this guy hate us, he hated my dad's cat.  He, however, loved Cadillacs.  So, he trades in his old Cadillac and buys a brand new one.  He gets off work and walks down his oyster shell driveway, and sees my dad's cat on his brand new car.  So, being the mean old crazy guy he was, it made perfect sense to him to throw oyster shells at my dad's cat, you know...the one sitting on his brand new Cadillac...to scare it off.  I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my entire life.  Fortunately he didn't have the strength to throw the shells that far, but it was fun to watch none the less.

Telemarkers that try to explain how computers work and why I need to buy services to protect my companies files.

Telemarketer - "hello sir, may I speak to your IT department?"

Me- I can help you with that.

Tele- Sir I am calling to offer you a service that will save your company money, protect your computers and software from hackers.

Then I say "sounds expensive, I should probably just pay a local guy to fix our problems"  (the Bait)

"no sir, its not expensive, we train our employees and walk them through the process, so instead of hundreds of employee's with a degree we only have a few. Then we send out the ones we trained in house to fix your computers while having phone support from a number of well qualified technicians."  (the hook)

Me- "Capital! So your saying you have some kid that makes 9 bucks an hour, come here, guesses on what to do over the phone with some guy in another state explaining everything, while at the same time having access to literally millions of dollars worth of information on my company and the secrets we keep?" (the sinker)

"Well sir have a nice day..."

You never laid out a good reason to ban the mere possession of a cell phone on campus. It has nothing to do with rights, it has to do with blanket rules that have no rational basis and you failed to address the usefulness of said devices in emergencies. It's ludicrous to expect teachers/staff to be with every kid in an emergency and cell phones have proven to be very effective at getting information out to law enforcement/authorities in emergency situations, particularly when one or a few kids are cut off from everyone else and are scared of coming out of hiding. "Because we made the rule" doesn't cut it with me when more common sense and rational means exist to keep order in the classroom. Make the students turn off their cell phones in the classroom and confiscate them till the end of the day if they break the rule (in-school suspension or other such measures for repeat offenders). That makes perfect sense and protects both order in the classroom and the convenience and safety of having communication at hand. If the parents complain because Little Johnny had his phone out in class and got it taken away for the day then they need to have it carefully explained to them that they should stuff it because Little Johnny would get better grades if he paid attention in class instead of texting his friends.

I am, of course, speaking mainly of High School (maybe Junior High, but I'm on the fence there) and I just get fed up with the knee-jerk reaction to ban anything new.

Then again, I'm arguing with someone who probably wanted to ban clay tablets on campus when they were invented.  :rolling_lol:

:rolling_lol:

we had a bomb threat at our school and the teachers didnt allow the kids to use the phones in there room, so the only way to call parents was cell phones (o yea and all the doors in the school locked and we werent allowed to leave our classrooms and they covered the rooms with a blackout thing) the caller said the bomb was in the school...

So they put you in lockdown with a bomb reportedly in the school?  Uh, yeah, great idea...someone says they are going to blow the school up, so let's lock all the kids inside!  Wow!  :doh!:

Yeah.. I just must be stupid.

I dunno..

I guess I just think if they had specific information on where the threat was then between the Sherriffs dept, Fire Marshall, and school officials they made a sound judgement based on available information - and if they decided a lock down was best then maybe it was.

Or, I guess I could have listened to a bunch of 16 year old kids with a fraction of the information they had.

For all I know the threat could have said it was 'located near an exit to the building' and set to go off when a door was opened.

Well.. had Lil Phooey been there I would have bet on those in authority, not some kid with a cell phone second guessing everything that was going on.

Something else people don't think of is a bunch of kids exiting the building through tight openings is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Snipers dream.

So with all the school shootings in recent years it would make sense that the thought of a 'fake' bomb threat in order to inflict casualties via shooting is a reasonable and very plausible scenerio.

Had that been the case and some nut job took out 20 students or so during a fire drill everyone would be complaining about how those in charge didn't forsee the possiblilty nor take steps to protect against it.

Yeah, and what if it hadn't been a threat?  How would you have felt about them locking Lil' Phooey in a building with an actual bomb? I mean think about it...if I'm a bomber and I figure out that SOP for a bomb threat is now to lock everyone in the building, I'm going to call in a bomb threat, wait till everyone is locked down, and blow stuff up so I can be sure I kill lots of people.  Not only that, but if I'm a student intent on targeting some of my friends, it makes it easy to know where they are if I know where they are locked down.  They are even nice enough to black out the windows so they can't see me coming...  Unless they are locking the kids down in a room with no windows, the lockdown procedure makes them much more "fish in a barrel" if you ask me.

Yeah, and what if it hadn't been a threat?  How would you have felt about them locking Lil' Phooey in a building with an actual bomb? I mean think about it...

I am thinking about it.....

What we have is the beeps posting of his perspective of what happened.  He knows none of the particulars, none of the alternative scenarios, etc...

But we also have a letter that states the staff, sherrifs dept, fire marshall, and assistant superintendent were involved - and a letter that insinuates it was a collective decision what happened was the best choice at the time.

Now call me goofy.. but and I would feel a lot better about locking Lil Phooey down based on those 'in the know' rather than the hindsight armchair quarterbacking of some 16 year old kid with a fraction of the knowledge of those trained to deal with situations like this.

No offense meant to anyone.. but we have just a fraction of the information.. and we're not giving anyone the benefit that they might actually have made the best decision at the time.

OK.. take this.. say I call in a threat and say the following:

"I planted a bomb somewhere in the school that will blow up in one hour.  Don't try to leave.  If you try to leave I will shoot you one by one as you exit the doors.  It will be like shooting fish in a barrel."

Now.. what would you do?  Myself.. if I thought I had an hour I'd spend that hour securing the perimeter for a safe exit of the kids, and untiil that happened keep them locked down tight blacked out away from windows and sniper shots until I felt reasonably assured I could get them out safe.

Then again, I could have just ran them all out at once and guessed that there was no sniper... but if that was the case why would I think there was a bomb in the first place?

Drive thru please....
